A Bar, Boston, Tuesday

In the end, Ezra had decided to drag Dante out to a bar. Not one of the Coterie ones, but still one that he'd frequented sometimes, looking to have a good time. It wasn't as high-end as, say, something within the Purgatory complex, but it was still several steps up from something like that dive he'd found Dante performing at earlier this year.

Funnily enough, this one seemed to have an open mic night going on. Or, would have - there was a flier advertising it at the door, but they were a little early. Those proceedings had not started yet as they walked in.

"It's not a bunny party," Ezra noted, glancing back at Dante with a little smirk, "but I think it works."

"You ever eat one?" Dante wondered.

"Of the teal ones?" Ezra checked, before shaking his head. "No. They're just a little too smart. That's what makes them less fun than the ones in Maine."

"Rather not have the challenge, huh?" Dante said, making an amused noise.

"I didn't say I didn't try," Ezra pointed out with a crooked smirk. "Just that I didn't eat one."

Because being unsuccessful was a thing, even if she wasn't usually so free with admitting it.

"Anyway, deer aren't really my preferred prey. Too big. They're fun to spook and chase around, though."

Dante made a soft noise, almost a laugh, as they walked down the block. "So what is?" he said. "Your preferred prey, I mean."

"Apart from the irresistably attractive people everywhere?" Ezra replied with a small but decidedly vulpine smirk, managing to hit a certain normal level of Ezra-ness at least once during this conversation.

Then he shrugged. "Wild geese. They're fox-appropriate in size, and feisty enough to keep things interesting."

This time, the laugh was big and genuine. "Aw," Dante said, "Bet you were a fuckin' neighborhood favorite, Ezra, bane of asshole birds."

Ezra smirked and shrugged. He really, really liked hearing Dante laugh, but he wasn't going to make a big show of it.

"We don't get a lot of birds in the general vicinity of our house, anymore."

"You probably have a good second career in chasing off geese if you ever get outta this one," Dante said. This time, it sounded like a joke - he wasn't ragging on Ez about it again. "I only saw geese a few times growing up, but fuck, they're the only animals that ever seemed like they wanted to challenge me to a duel."

"See? Feisty, that's exactly what I meant."

What fun was it if it was too easy?

Dante made an amused noise. "First time I've heard about you goin' for the difficult cases."

Ezra shrugged a shoulder. Pushed his hair back again, too. "It's a little different, going full-on fox."

That was where his non-lazy side lived.

"Oh, so that's where all your actually-doing-shit went," Dante teased.

"Pretty much," Ezra replied, all too cheerfully. "Being lazy is fine and fun for being human, or human-shaped --" Because there was a major distinction between those two. "-- but a fox needs to stay a little more active."

"That's one way of putting 'you got no attention span as a fox'," Dante said. He'd stuffed his hands back into his pockets, attempting not to get distracted by the pizza joint down the road. "You ever still just do it for the fun of it?"

The smell of pizza had already caught Ezra's nose, because of course it had.

"Which part?"

"Chasing geese just for the hell of it."

Ezra snorted. "Adorable of you to even entertain the possibility that I've ever stopped, darling."

Dante shrugged easily. "Just wondering," he said. "I mean, I know you pulled it on Kathy the first time you guys tried to do it."

He looked amused at that, too.

Ezra's smirk turned into a dramatic eye roll. "That was just the one time."

"Isn't it always?" Dante joked.

Look at him. Not mentioning the pizza place.

The pizza place Ezra was eyeing? That one?

"Whatever, darling, I made it up to her in spades later in a less distracting environment," he said, with a mock-indignant hair toss. Sort of. His hair wasn't quite long enough for that, just yet.

Look, it had been made abundantly clear to Dante by two certain parties that he couldn't survive on pizza alone and he should probably stop trying. He was trying to be good.

Dante snickered softly. "Yeah, I don't doubt that," he said, giving Ezra a friendly nudge with his shoulder.

"God, I miss her so much," Ezra sighed, theatrical enough in his wistfulness to make it sound like an act when it wasn't, not entirely.

Then he nodded towards the pizza place, because he wasn't either of those two parties who were so wrongfully trying to expand Dante's food groups. "Speaking of, do you wanna grab a bite to eat?"

Dante figured it was mostly not an act, but he wasn't going to say anything about it.

"Oh thank god," he said instead. "... I mean, sure."
