Even though it was probably surprising to a lot of people who (thought they) knew him and his lazy ways, Ezra was actually back in class this week. But it wasn't really that surprising. Yes, he was lazy, but he could up his game when the incentives were good enough. Like when there were a ton of hot people around. Or when he could do something that was both new for him and something he was naturally good at, and which didn't involve scaring or hurting anyone.

But of course he'd only really tell anyone about the hot people.

Or how hot he himself looked when he was wrapped up in the silks and suspended gracefully in the air.

He didn't text anyone during class today, because now that they'd all gotten hang of what it felt like to be in the air, upside down or not, there was too much to do for him to devote all his time to texting while he waited. But still, because he was incorrigible, he managed to get some new selfies with his silks, and even got one of the instructors to take a picture of him where he was victoriously posing rather high up, having successfully climbed his way there with one of silks winding around his ankle and between his feet. It was only too bad he hadn't thought to ask them to video it.

And now that class was over, and he'd taken a moment to shower and cool off, he was texting some of those pics to Sparkle, because he'd said he would. And Kathy, because surely she would appreciate some progress updates.

... And Ada, because why should everyone else have all the fun.

"In a class filled with athletic people who wrap themselves in silk and hang elegantly from the ceiling?"

That was clearly a rhetorical question.

"Obviously."

"I know, it was kinda a prompt to get you to talk about 'em," Dante said easily.

"Oh, but that's my very personal business," Ezra replied lightly, "so I don't know if I'm going to."

Or, you know, Kathy's visit and the talks therein had messed up his compass on what he really wanted to talk about and to whom. So now he was doing a tightrope walk of guessing where his own limit of comfort was.

"All right," Dante said, though he skipped a beat before he got to that. "Having fun doing it?"

That was much easier a topic. Good choice, Dante.

"Yes," Ezra replied. "Turns out I'm very well suited for it, not that anyone should've had any doubts about it. It's... something a little unlike anything else I've done before."

Just taking a class, voluntarily, outside of an actual school was a little out of the ordinary for his utterly lazy self.

"Gonna take a couple of turns at Ada's carnival after this?" Dante teased. "But nah, that's cool. You could use a hobby or two."

"People keep saying that," Ezra noted lightly. "I'm not sure I agree, but it's fun."

"Eh, life can't always be sex, drugs and rock'n roll," said Dante, and in an uncharacteristic moment of self-control, bit back a comment about his impending IKEA visit with Kathy. He had no idea if Ezra had heard about the move, and despite some carefully-buried irritation about Ez's comments about his texting, he didn't want to set the guy off.

... to Ezra about anything. Ez didn't get pissed quickly.

"Sometimes you just gotta chill out in some scarves and feel smug about being good at it for an hour."

Oh, but he had, and he was going to bring it up, too, probably. (Or something connected to it, anyway.) He was just trying to have some semblance of an ordinary conversation, before.

"Obviously," he said. "As far as hobbies go, I'm not sure one could get more me in that sense without literally involving me sprawled on a couch while someone feeds me grapes and fancy chocolates and tells me I'm pretty."

"See, the next step is to convince the other people in your class to try feeding you grapes and fancy chocolates from the scarves," Dante said. "That's some Roman empire shit right there."

Ezra paused.

"Maybe for the end-of-class show..."

Goddammit, Dante.

"Send me pictures," Dante said, grinning.

"Sparkle's already making a costume."

Which, even though somewhat relevant information, was actually Ezra sidestepping past what Dante had said. Yes, despite sending him a shot earlier in the conversation.

His compass was a mess. But at least he could be smooth about it! This time.

Dante snickered. "Oh man, you're gonna go full glitz, huh."

"What even is the point, otherwise?"

"I mean, maybe you discovered an understated artistic side none of us knew about," Dante said, leaning back as he surveyed the street.

"Hey, now. My entire life is an intricate work of art."

Just... a messy one.

"But not understated," Dante said, grinning.

"No," Ezra agreed. "Can't say I've ever been that."

There was a very subtle wry quality to his tone.

"If you don't blind someone in the audience with sequins on this one, I'm gonna be disappointed," Dante said easily.

"Sequins actually come off too easily." A little fun fact for you there, Dante. "But the point still stands."

Dante laughed softly. "Fine, fine, you're the expert," he said, getting up to his feet. "I should probably go see if there's trouble anywhere else in town..."

Ezra's mouth opened, then closed, then opened again. Then closed again. There were several things he wanted to say (or some that he should've said, regardless of wanting to), and he tried to pick the right onw.

It was a long pause.

"Isn't there always?"

Shit, that had come out flatter than he'd meant. Wasn't ideal in any other way, either.

"Not nearly as much as the first year," Dante said, and you could practically hear his eyes narrowing in his tone.

Funnily enough, Ezra did.

So he inhaled, then forced his tone a little casual. "Quick question, D." Good start. "What's the situation between you and me?"

Kathy had asked him the same.
