A House, Currant, Maine, Saturday

Earlier in the week, Kathy had requested Ezra to tell her when he was free to be visited at home in Currant. And today, well, he was free for a visit: the house was empty, Lock was off in Boston with Bianca, and Ezra had nothing in the way of obligations happening. So he'd told her that.

And now he was just waiting around, lounging on the couch, reading a book. Easy Saturday, just like he liked it.

It was a good thing they hadn't made specific plans to see each other because Kathy was already running late by her sense of it. Part of it was the pies (apple for Anders, strawberry for Dante, cherry for Extra), but most of it had been explaining to Ronin that yes, he was the goodest boy ever, but he still couldn't come with her.

It had been a very hard, very sad discussion, omg.

But she was here, breathing just a tiny bit more freely than she did in Limbo City even now, and the pushing her way through the door that had been left ajar.

"Ha!" she said, pointing. "I knew you were literate!"

Ezra had heard the door, but he'd assumed it was Lock. They didn't really tend to leave the door unlocked, after all, not even though they practically lived in the middle of the woods.

So that explained how it was even possible for her to catch a glimpse of his book - Tristram Shandy, if she happened to be quick enough to catch the cover - before he shoved it between the couch cushions and relaxed back into the posture of someone who couldn't possibly have been reading, just now. "I was merely admiring the typeface."

Guess Lock hadn't closed the door properly when he'd left.

"That's an even worse excuse than looking the pictures in Jane Eyre was," Kathy informed him, grinning widely. "Made extra believable by how fast you shoved it under the cushions like you're a teenaged Kathy trying not to get caught reading romance novels."

"I did no such thing."

No, he'd been infinitely smoother about it than teenaged Kathy would've been. Otherwise, yes, correct.

"Did you just come here to take swipes at my hobby of appreciating fonts?"

"Nope, that's just an unexpected bonus to the trip," Kathy told him gleefully. "Though I'm absolutely willing to listen to you pontificate on your opinion about serifs." She held out the pie plate in her hands. "I even brought refreshments for the lecture."

Okay, that at least made Ezra push himself a little more upright on the couch. He looked a little more alert.

"What kind?"

He sniffed the air.

"Cherry?"

"It seemed appropriate," Kathy said with a grin.

In that it wasn't at all.

"Cherry with a sugar glaze top."

"Oooh," Ezra said appreciatively. He was easily impressed when it came to baked goods. "Okay, you're forgiven. Gimme."

She hadn't actually apologized for anything, but that was beside the point!

Kathy did not actually hand over the pie. Instead, she just raised an eyebrow at him. "Forgiven for what, exactly?"

"For breaking into my house, and insulting me," he informed her as he actually got up from the couch and stepped closer to her. "Both of which are a hugee affront to my person, darling."

"The door was open," Kathy said, tipping her head up to look at him, not moving from her spot. "No jury in the world will convict me."

She didn't deny the insulting, though.

"And I'm not taking you to court," Ezra pointed out, as he stepped right into her personal space. For funsies. "I'm expecting an apology. Those are two very different things."

"Mmmm, you have very high expectations," Kathy said, standing her ground. "I could possibly see myself begging your pardon for walking in the door, but that's as much as you're getting."

Ezra smirked at her, then leaned in until his face was only inches from hers.

And he said, silkily, "Then beg."

Because it was fun to say, dammit, and she'd left him the perfect opening.

"I said possibly," Kathy purred, staring up into his eyes, mouth quirking. "Not that I would."

"And I called you on the possibility, because you also didn't say you wouldn't," he replied, keeping his voice quiet and smooth. Private. "So what's it going to be, my little hotteok, hmm?"

"Pie?" Kathy suggested, bringing it up to be framed by her chest.

Ezra clucked his tongue. "Disappointing," he said, possibly at her chest but he'd claim it was at the pie.

Which he was going to try and reach for now, anyway.

"You had better have been talking to the pie right there," Kathy said, giving it over.

"Obviously."

He was already traipsing towards the kitchen to get something to dig into the pie with.

"But my disappointment was for the lack of begging."

He was traipsing into the kitchen to get utensils. Kathy was pouncing on the couch to dig for that book.

And then was gonna just lounge on his couch, like the cat that ate the canary.

Ezra got... two spoons. Because he didn't feel like dealing with the hassle of plates. (Or making Lock deal with the hassle of plates, really.) And he pocketed one of the spoons, too, instead of carrying it out in the open.

What he saw when he got back into the living room told him he'd made the right call.

"Excuse me, darling, it appears you've landed on my seat." Like a book-digging menace.

"Oh have I?" Kathy asked, all innocence. "I hadn't realized. I was just so fascinated by this typeface."

Ezra rolled his eyes, dramatically, before trying to sit on her feet. So, better move those.

"Cute, darling."

Or keep them there and warm them up on his ass, which seemed like an infinitely better idea.

"I know," she said, smiling prettily up at him. "I generally am."
